Kaduna Approves N300m for
Workers’ Houses

Over N300 million has been approved by the Kaduna State
government for the construction of 1,500 houses for civil servants in the
state in line with the state government desire of providing shelter for its
workers, according to the state’s Commissioner of Information and Home
Affairs, Saidu Adamu.
Adamu explained that the houses would be spread across the three senatorial
zones of the state and would be mortgaged to civil servants, adding that the
approved sum would soon be given to the Federal Mortgaged Bank for quick
execution of the project.
He added that the state government is also expecting the sum of N3.7 billion
from the Federal Government to spend on generation of power and water from the
Gurara Waterworks in order to resuscitate moribund industries in the state.
According to Adamu, who spoke to journalists in Kaduna, “The houses are to be
spread across the state, with 1,000 in Kaduna, 300 in Zaria and 200 in
Kafanchan. Most of the houses in Kaduna will be sited at the new Millennium
City .
“The council has also approved the establishment of a medical college at the
state university with Federal Government assistance in order to train enough
medical doctors for our medical institutions. “
The state government has also ordered the Ministry of
Health to come up with an immediate plan for the establishment of 500-bed
hospital to replace the Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital now moved to Shika,
Zaria.
“Council has approved the establishment of a leasing company to liaise with
banks and ensure the success of the state government’s plan to purchase 100
taxis to be leased to individuals for use within the state.
“The state government will also build a shopping complex along Muhammadu
Buhari Way between Swimming Road and the roundabout at the space where the
Ministry of Tourism and Culture as well as Ministry of Establishment and
Training are currently sited. The ministries will be moved away to another
site. The shopping complex will be built in partnership with private
organisations to reduce street hawking in the state, especially along Ahmadu
Bello Way.”
Speaking in the same vein, the State Commissioner for Education Alhaji
Suleiman Lawal Kauru said a law is in the pipeline to back up the state free
and compulsory primary education programme. He noted that contract worth N1
billion have been awarded for the rehabilitation of the primary schools,
provision of uniform for the pupils, textbooks, science and technical
equipment.
“In the 2008 budget lots of money is earmarked for actualising the free and
compulsory primary education, while all fees including the Parent Teachers
Association (PTA) fee has been abolished in the state.
“The state government has awarded contract worth N1 billion for the
rehabilitation of primary schools, provision of furniture, teaching
materials, science equipments, technical education equipments as well as
houses for primary school teachers beginning from the headmasters.
“School based management committee will be established by the state government
to manage the schools. The committee will involve the entire community as
education is beyond d power of government alone every body is now a
stakeholder. Government intends to have at least two boarding primary schools
in each senatorial zone to be managed by the government in order to actualise
our declaration of emergency in the primary school education sector.”
“Government also approved N73m for NECO examination in respect of indigenes
who have 4 credits and above to rewrite the school leaving certificate
examination.
