MINISTRY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
Hon. Commissioner Dr Muhammad Sani Bello
facilitating and coordinating the development of Science and Technology and
formulate such policies that will boost technology
transfer and to promote information technology, computer literate, undertake
and to encourage research programmes in the filed of Science and Science
education.
The structure of the ministry is made up of four Departments, Administration
and Finance, Science , Technology, Research Planning and Development . Like
any other new establishments, the ministry is still faced with teething
problems.
Being conscious
of the fact that no nation in the world can achieve technological break
through where Science and Technology base is weak.
The Ministry
also met with various stakeholders in the fields of Science and Technology
and has come up with a draft blue print and is planning a state. In
conjunction with the Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria, the ministry has
successfully organized a three-week computer appreciation-training course
for all its management staff. Also, the ministry held series of meeting
with the trades people in the two panteka markets, which culminated in
establishing a cordial working relationship between the two. Presently the
ministry is working towards signing a memorandum of understanding between
the trades people of panteka markets for the posting of BATC students to
them for Industrial Attachment, prior to the transfer of the BATC’s to this
ministry the UNPP has purchased some equipment and tools to the tune of N 1
1,116,800 for distribution to the 12 BATCs in the state.
The
setting of the four (4) science schools
In its
efforts to improve the education sector in general and
science, technical and vocational education in particular,
the current Administration of His Excellency, Arc.
Mohammed Namadi Sambo, set up a Think Tank Committee in
2007 to examine the policies and practices of primary and
secondary education in the State. This was with a view to
identifying areas requiring improvement especially in
science and technical education.
The
Committee recommended amongst other things, the
establishment of at least three 3 modern and model schools
in each of the senatorial districts. Also, these should
be designed to meet the challenges of the twenty-first (21st)
century. This is pertinent, as it has been observed that
the State has acute shortage of manpower in science
related disciplines that should be addressed. In pursuit
of this recommendation and observation, the Kaduna State
Government has decided to establish four (4) new Science
Secondary Schools, three (3) for boys and one (1) for
girls, to complement the existing six (6) Science
secondary schools which have a total enrolment of only
5,393 students.
Pursuant
to this, the Kaduna State Government through the State
Ministry of Science and Technology commissioned a team of
various building disciplines as Consultants to design and
supervise the Construction of the four (4) new Science
Secondary Schools in the three senatorial zones that make
up the State.
Accordingly, the Consultants began to develop the brief
from the State Ministry of Science and Technology into a
set of preliminary proto-type designs, which were reviewed
by the State Government and upon acceptance of the
designs, a preliminary estimate was prepared to serve as a
guide for the most probable cost of construction.
Meanwhile,
the State Executive Council at its 26th meeting
A(2007)92 held on 10th October, 2007 had
approved the setting of the four (4) science schools thus:
-
Science Secondary School – Manchok – Kauru
Local Government
-
Science Secondary School – Rigachikun –Igabi
Local Government
-
Science Secondary School – Sabon Gari –

-

As of now,
Government has acquired suitable land in each of the areas
where the schools are to be sited and construction has
begun.
